Statement on Thai Delegation to APEC November 8, 2011

The United States of America warmly welcomes the Thai delegation to the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which is being held this month in Hawaii. We know that these APEC meetings and the summit will be a fruitful events for all 21 economies, especially Thailand.

We understand completely Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s decision not to attend APEC in Hawaii this year, due to the flooding that has affected millions of people throughout Thailand. Our sympathy goes out to the Thai people, many of whom have lost their loved ones, their homes, their farms, and their businesses. We stand with Thailand and are confident that its people will recover, reconstruct, and rebuild, stronger than ever.

We look forward to the Prime Minister visiting the U.S. in the future. Thailand is one of America’s oldest friends in Asia, with both countries working together as partners for more than 178 years. Standing side by side, we know Thailand and the U.S. will forge even closer ties during this Pacific century.
