Ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has arrived in Japan with backing from the new Thai government led by his sister.
Thaksin flew in to Tokyo on Monday and said he is very happy to be able to come to Japan. He also said that during his stay, he will make several speeches and visit areas affected by the March 11th earthquake.
Thaksin has been living in exile since a coup ousted him from office in 2006. He was later sentenced to 2 years in prison for corruption.
Japan bans entry of foreigners who has been given a prison term of more than one year. But the government issued a special visa for Thaksin after a request from the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Since Thaksin's ouster, his supporters and opponents have divided Thailand.
All eyes are on whether Thaksin will say something about his involvement in his sister's government.
