But it was probably one of the proudest days of Prince Charles’s life – his son William’s wedding – and he is clearly keen to showcase the fact.
Charles is seen holding his step-granddaughter Eliza Lopes on the balcony of Buckingham Palace while Camilla gazes out over the crowds in the Mall.
Christmas wishes: Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall with William and Kate's bridesmaid Miss Eliza Lopes - the picture that adorns their Christmas card this year
The picture has been chosen as their official Christmas card, which was released by Clarence House today.
Printed on the outside of each charming card are the Prince of Wales' feathers and the Duchess of Cornwall’s cypher, with the words ‘Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year’ inside.
In previous years, Charles and Camilla have been pictured out in the snow on the Balmoral estate.
Eliza is the eldest child of Camilla’s daughter Laura, from her first marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles.
Although it is William and Kate’s first Christmas together as a married couple, St James’s Palace said today that the couple did not want to make their first joint card public.
