While the Thai media lied, was Abhisit holidaying in the Maldives? UPDATE 4

UPDATE 4 As it appears Abhisit is now back in Thailand, though significant claims from a variety of sources state that he was in the Maldives from the 20th to 23rd, I have adjusted the title of this blog posting. Problem now for Abhisit is if he denies this story and it then turns out he was on holiday while his loyal constituents in Bangkok awaited the deluge even his core support may run for cover.

UPDATE 3 Former finance minister Korn has released a photo on his twitter feed today of Mark Vej in Bangkok today. So where was Mark from the 20th to the 23rd? Still questions there to be answered. Given Mark’s previous “graceful” honesty on such issues as the shooting dead of nurses and kids in April/May and even on his own nationality (yes, eventually, he did turn out to be a British citizen) we may have to wait a while yet.

UPDATE 2 Another update to what appears to be a story where the full details are slowly emerging. Pheu Thai MP Nattawud Saikua is alleging on his Facebook pagethat Abhisit and his family flew out on Bangkok Airways PG 711 on October 20 and flew back by PG 712 on October 23. So it would appear Mark Vej is now back in Thailand. While in the Maldives I wonder if he went for a nice swim in the soothing, warm seas of the Indian Ocean? Lucky Mark.

UPDATE 1 Brief update to my original posting below but according to Thailand’s biggest selling national newspaper, Thai Rath, it appears that Abhisit is in the Maldives enjoying a luxury holiday. Khao Sod add to the confusion by reporting on 20th Oct that Abhisit travelled with his family to the UK using diplomatic passports (something denied by a Dem Party spokesman). One thing is for certain that Abhisit hasn’t been seen for days in Bangkok.

An unconfirmed rumour is going around that Thailand’s former PM and present leader of the opposition Democrat Party, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has fled Thailand for the comfort of a luxury resort in the Maldives.

The rumour speculates that Abhisit left Thailand in the last couple of days for a holiday.

Of course, Thailand’s Democrat Party-leaning press – such as the semi-delusional Bangkok Post – have been all over every single tiny mistake or error the democratically elected and popularly mandated Yingluck Shinawatra Pheu Thai government has made during the recent flood crisis.

Their allies at TAN Network got it so wrong they even attempted to twist the words of the UN’s Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, as they tried to undermine Yingluck’s government. Instead they drew a swift rebuke from the UN who demanded an immediate retraction of TAN Network’s quite appalling misrepresentation.

So, if Abhisit has run away from the floods to sip cocktails on a Maldives beach, will the Bangkok Post and TAN now turn their attention to him? If this rumour does turn out to be true it is harder to imagine a greater dereliction of duty than abandoning Thailand at such a moment. But then the shill-like Bangkok Post and the Democrats wouldn’t know what a “statesman” was like if it bit them on the backside.
