Lese Majeste offender’s son goes on hunger strike- Bangkok


The son of labour activist Somyot Pruksakasemsuk goes on hunger strike to protest continued refusal of the Criminal Court to release him on bail. He is accused of committing Lese Majeste offenses. Bangkok, Thailand. 11th February, 2012.

Somyot Pruksakasemsuk is a political and labour activist who was arrested on 30th April 2011 for campaigning to collect signatures for a petition to repeal Article 112 of the Criminal Code, or better-known as Lese Majeste. He has repeatedly been refused bail.

Lese Majeste and any issues pertaining to the Royal Family of Thailand is highly controversial. Recent years have seen increases in arrests and convictions in relation to this crime.

Somyot's son, Tai Panitan Pruksakasemsuk, intends to go on hunger strike for 112 hours from 11th February until 16th February 2012.
